Abstract
Esports is large and growing rapidly, with 86% of 15–24-year-olds reporting that they play video games, 91 per cent of Australian households reporting that they own a video game device, and 1.8 million Australians reporting they are esports fanatics (IGEA, 2022). Esports has been criticised for promoting a sedentary lifestyle and until now no significant program to get grassroots gamers physically active exists in Australia. META currently runs Australia’s largest and fastest growing high school esports platform. It reaches and interacts with students that traditional grassroots sports programs are not reaching. Active Gamers seeks to leverage META’s platform by partnering with AFL-MAX to develop and integrate a best practice physical literacy program.
