Abstract

The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), also known by many pseudonyms such as 'DaNang lung', was first described in 1967 by Ashbaugh and colleagues as the 'acute onset of tachypnea, hypoxemia and loss of compliance after a variety of stimuli' .1 Continued research examining the underlying mechanisms and management strategies is now translating into improved outcome
