Abstract

The recent Lancet Commission on gender and global health represents an important milestone in advancing understandings of gender justice in global health. The Commission addresses the critical intersection of gender and health, advocating for a paradigm shift to more inclusive conceptualizations of gender in health programs and policies worldwide. Emphasizing gender as a key influence on health and health care access, the Commission highlights the impacts of biases; entwined social, political, legal, and economic factors; and gender inequalities and antigender actors on progress in gender justice. Recommended actions to support gender justice are presented. We commend the Commission for engaging with concepts of gender justice and strongly agree that more inclusive gender definitions, collection and analysis of gender-disaggregated data, and moving beyond treating gender as synonymous with women and girls and “single-axis” thinking focused solely on gender are critical for addressing health inequities...
