Abstract
Saint Francis of Assisi (1181 / 1182-1226 AD) represents a religious figure of extraordinary importance in the history of Italy, so much so that he rose to the rank of patron saint of Italy [1] in the year 1939, together with Saint Catherine of Siena [2], by the will of Pope Pius XII (1876-1958). Finally, this process of constant public attention and consideration finds a particular emblematic expression in the choice of the name “Francesco” by Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, at the time of his election to the Soglio Petrino in 2013.
The greatness and complexity of the figure of St. Francis would require an in-depth study that goes beyond the space granted to us, as well as, speaking of a very rich aspect of his existence, that is, of the morbid conditions that afflicted him, one cannot but dwell briefly here only on of some main elements.
