Abstract

Dear Sir,
English-speaking countries like Australia and the United States have fewer psychiatric beds per capita than leading European nations such as France and Germany.1 Large reductions in the U.S. and Australian bed stocks were predicated on respect for human rights and individual accountability, combined with state governments seeking to minimise costs on public beds for severe psychiatric illness.
