Abstract

This chapter provides the reader with a stepwise approach to the decision making and surgical management of a patient with an acute embolic obstruction of the superior mesenteric artery with resultant intestinal ischemia. The importance of a multidisciplinary surgical approach (vascular and general surgery), the surgical steps involved, and the role for laparostomy are discussed.
