Abstract

Infectious complications are a major contributor to mortality in those admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). As a result, urgent treatment with empirical, broad-spectrum antibiotics is common. Selective digestive decontamination (SDD), where prophylactic antibiotics and antifungals are administered directly to the gut, have also been trialled to prevent sepsis, with varying success
