Abstract

Education has been a part of being human for millennia. The formal study of education has a shorter history, with the first professors of education appointed in universities in more recent centuries. Quality of life as a framework for viewing disability and other social fields is newer still, dating from the last quarter of the 20th century. To this point, few applications of quality of life models to education have been made. This chapter looks at the history of this link between fields and draws conceptual similarities. In doing so, it sets the scene for the chapters to follow which directly examine and apply quality of life principles to challenges in the field of education.
