Abstract

The painful elbow arthroplasty represents a diagnostic challenge. Differentiating mechanical, aseptic loosening from low-grade infection is a particular challenge with significant implications for surgical planning. Routine measures such as serology and joint aspiration are frequently equivocal because of indolent organisms. Arthroscopy is a valuable diagnostic tool as it allows direct assessment of the mechanical interfaces and tissue sampling through a minimally invasive approach and is an adjunct in making a mechanical and microbiological diagnosis of the pain. Furthermore, arthroscopy can be used in a therapeutic capacity to provide definitive treatment for some problems. This chapter describes the indications and technique for performing arthroscopy in the setting of a previous elbow arthroplasty.
