Abstract
Ulnar styloid impaction syndrome is characterized by the impaction of the styloid process of ulna and triquetrum, resulting in chondromalacia, synovitis and ulnar sided wrist pain. Aetiologies include any cause that brings the carpus closer to the ulnar styloid or vice versa. The diagnosis is made from a history of ulnar sided wrist pain, provoked by Ruby’s test. Plain radiographs may reveal a relatively long ulnar styloid process and progressive degenerative changes on the ulnar styloid and upon the triquetrum. An MRI reveals focal sclerosis and chondromalacia. Ulnar styloid impaction has been traditionally treated with open ulnar styloidectomy. This chapter describes an arthroscopic technique that is effective and safe and minimizes postoperative morbidity.
