Abstract

Analysis of the Australian and New Zealand Audit of Surgical Mortality demonstrated that almost 50% of deaths after esophago-gastric cancer surgery were potentially preventable (https://doi.org/10.1245/s10434-023-13571-8). These cases were characterized by higher rates of sepsis, multiorgan dysfunction syndrome, reoperations, and other complications. This study was approved by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Human Research Ethics Committee.
