Abstract

The Australian Snubfin Dolphin is a small-sized delphinid within the genus Orcaella. Since it was first reported from Australia in 1964, this genus was considered monotypic, with the Irrawaddy Dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) being the only species. In 2005, a study on the morphology and genetics of the genus showed that the Orcaella in Australia differs from those elsewhere, and it is now regarded as a separate species, the Australian Snubfin Dolphin.
