Abstract

Despite the high numbers of older Australians currently accessing aged care and predicted to do so in the future, there has not been an adequate understanding of the overall quality of the care experienced for people in the aged care system. The level of importance given by society overall to achieving universal quality of care has also been unclear. These gaps in knowledge were the subject of several national research projects undertaken during the life of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
