Abstract

A beam-steerable frequency-switchable antenna pair is demonstrated using a varactor-based frequency-swappable diplexer. The diplexer enables independent selection of two bands at its two output ports at 2.45 and 5.8 GHz and provides phase shifts of up to 87.5° at 2.45 GHz and 48.0° at 5.8 GHz, which allows beam-steering functionality. To demonstrate its performance, two Yagi-Uda antennas are excited by the diplexer, showing frequency switching and beam steering at 2.45 GHz. The antenna elements can be turned on or off, or, when used in pair, they can steer the beam from -21° to 21°. This multi-functional diplexer offers a promising solution for realizing dual-band or single-band frequency- and pattern-reconfigurable antenna systems.
