Beyond the diagnosis: dementia's social and economic challenges in Australia

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Dementia is one of Australia’s biggest health challenges, with far-reaching societal and economic implications (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2024). It is often seen as a personal or family issue, but it affects our communities and society at large. Understanding the social and economic impacts of dementia is crucial if we are to meet the needs of individuals and families and to ensure that no one faces this challenge alone (Gauthier et al., 2022; World Health Organization, 2017). This article highlights the urgent need to address dementia through coordinated efforts across healthcare, social care, research, and public policy to effectively manage its impact on society and the economy.
