Abstract

The “Big Talks for Little People: Child Mental Health Module” is a primary school module which aims to help school students better understand their mental health and enhance their well-being. The digitally delivered module comprises six lessons incorporating six social and emotional learning (SEL) topics on mental health for young children. The focus on SEL topics, including relationship building, self-awareness, social awareness, self-management and responsible decision making, emphasises the preventative features of the intervention. In addition to the six lessons, there are eight teacher information sheets providing teachers with further information and links to resources on topics such as “trauma informed teaching”, “anxiety”, “bullying” and “proprioception”. Teachers can use a digital platform to run the six-lesson module in their classrooms. The focus is on early intervention and prevention for all children in each class. The digital module is designed to be updated in response to new events, e.g. COVID-19 and bushfires. The six-lesson downloadable outlines are each accompanied by a digital animation depicting the topic for that lesson, e.g. conflict resolution intended to promote classroom discussion.
