Abstract
Disorders in the motility of the gallbladder and sphincter of Oddi are recognized and accepted as being responsible for recurrent abdominal pain. Furthermore, sphincter of Oddi motility disorders may be a cause of recurrent pancreatitis and may contribute to gallstone formation. Understanding of the normal physiologic mechanisms that control gallbladder and sphincter of Oddi motility is essential if we are to understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of disordered motility. In this review, studies published over the past 12 months on basic physiology and pathophysiology of gallbladder and sphincter of Oddi motility are summarized.
