Book overview and setting the scene

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter sets the scene for exploring integrated knowledge translation within applied health and social care research. It outlines how researchers at the Caring Futures Institute are embedding integrated knowledge translation principles into their research practice. The chapter begins by distinguishing applied from basic research and explains the role of applied research institutes in co-designing solutions with diverse partners. It then briefly traces the evolution of knowledge translation and the shift toward integrated approaches that embrace complexity and systems thinking. This chapter introduces the Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model, which offers a dynamic framework for understanding how knowledge moves across and within complex adaptive systems. Readers are encouraged to reflect on their own assumptions about research and evidence as they begin their integrated knowledge translation journey. By drawing on theoretical insights, practical strategies, and case examples, this chapter provides readers with foundational knowledge to support engagement, collaboration, and impact throughout the research process.
