Abstract
Each individual's understanding of nursing comes from personal experiences; from the way they reflect on, make sense of and learn from those experiences; from how nursing is perceived by society; and from how it is viewed politically. The way we respond to and organise all of this information helps us to generate theories of ways of thinking about nursing. The purpose of this chapter is to help beginning nurses through each step of this process - recognising and understanding their perceptions of nursing and then using concepts, working hypotheses, frameworks and theories to inform the delivery of nursing care. This chapter will help you understand how to use your everyday clinical experience s, how to access the range of theories you need to draw from, and explain why you need to think creatively about nursing and providing person-centred care. The fundamentals of Care Framework (described in more detail on p. 23) is the intersection of concepts, working hypotheses and theories and enables you to deliver care in a holistic manner.
