Abstract
It was possible to secure GMH’s future prior
to the federal election if bipartisan support for a co-investment package was pledged but it wasn’t. Instead, assistance to the industry became a political football. The major auto producer had made it well known over recent years that it needed continued co- investment from the Federal and State Governments to maintain its operations in Australia. Chief Executive Mike Devereux was extraordinarily candid about the need for government to continue supporting the industry or risk closure.
