Abstract
Practitioners and researchers within maternity services have identified the importance of providing humanised, respectful and compassionate care (Bohren et al. 2020, 113-26; Lokugarnage and Pathberiya 2017, 267; Miller et al. 2016), with an emphasis on both the provision of safe care and on quality interactions that uphold birthing people's emotional integrity and dignity (Moridi et al. 2020; Morton and Simpkin 2019). There are many complex problems within current maternity services, including the lack of access for many women around the world to adequate resources for safe birth. However, the issue that we focus on in this chapter hinges on the other half of that equation.
