Cavity expansion in cohesive-frictional soils with limited dilation

Abstract

The authors revisited the rigorous similarity solutions for cavity expansion incohesive-frictional soils that they developed two decades ago. By using the incremental velocity method proposed by Hill (1950), an extension was made for cavity expansion from zero initial radius in an ideal Mohr-Coulomb material with limited dilation instead of the general assumption of unlimited plastic dilation at a constant rate. Particularly, the effect of limited dilation on the cavity limiting pressure is identified and evaluated. However, an issue has been found when using the solution.
