Abstract

Of all the experiences in sport, the one commonality is retirement. It will happen at some point in an athlete’s career, so, in this sense, it is expected. Yet, so many athletes are unprepared for life after sport. The perspectives from around the world presented in this book share this common thread that, while retirement from sport is expected, it can be difficult. It is hoped that the stories shared here will help athletes, practitioners, academics and those who care for athletes as they leave sport to better understand the retirement experiences of athletes, so that athletes in the future can enjoy the fulfilling retirement they deserve.
