Abstract

Out of 160 women with secondary lymphedema of the arm, 27 were operated, 92 treated conservatively and 41 left untreated. In the untreated cases, the arms grew thicker and harder during the first 6 years. In the women treated conservatively, differences of circumference were reduced by 0.5 cm per 10 months; tissue tonometry showed that the arms had grown softer. 18% failed to respond to conservative treatment. In those who were operated on because, despite conservative treatment the arm had shown increasingly massive swelling, some increase of the swelling could again be observed after the 4th postoperative year.
