Dating and chronology

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

One of the important contributions of the Lagoons Project is to provide ages for the archaeology and geomorphology of the study regions. Only one published dated archaeological horizon in the New England Tableland Bioregion (820 BP, at Reddestone Creek megafauna site) existed prior to our study (Horton and Connah 1981). Consequently, we employed a generalised dating program that allowed us to sample the range of lagoon depositional contexts and understand their chronologies. Our approach (see Chapter 3) included the dating of sediment and charcoal samples using single-grain and multi-grain optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon dating. (see Figure 4.1 for sample locations).
In all, nine radiocarbon ages were determined for four sites together with 54 OSL ages (Tables 4.1 and 4.2).
