Abstract
Disasters are a recurring feature of human life and the extent to which they can be identified and managed is contingent upon our collective understanding of the meaning and dimensions of the concept. So, what is a disaster? What is disaster health? How do disasters differ from other emergencies? The aim of this chapter is to summarise the development and evolution of the definition of disasters along with other terms relevant to disaster management. On completion of this chapter, you should have:
1. Developed a detailed understanding of disasters and related terms.
2. Be able to conduct an informed discussion on the elements of these definitions and the relationships between concepts.
3. Identify ways in which disasters may be categorised and the relative benefits of these measures
