Dementia and the ageing prisoner

    Abstract

Older people represent the fastest growing age group in Australia's prison system. This fact brings an associated rise in cognitive impairment - straining a system that was set up primarily to support younger inmates. What do we know about the older prison population in Australia? How do dementia and prisons intersect, and what
are the options for supporting prisoners with dementia as their illness progresses?
