Abstract

It is not possible to envisage the medical scene in Sri Lanka without remembering Dennis Aloysuis. Dynamic, energetic, visionary, out-of-the-ordinary. Even his name had an interesting origin. According to Dennis, even though he had an ‘indigenous’ name, his Roman Catholic teacher could not pronounce it and so declared ‘From now on you are Dennis Aloysius’. Aloysius, the name of Italian Saint Aloysius of Gonzaga, common among British Roman Catholics, means ‘Famous Warrior’.
Throughout his life, Dennis was indeed a famous warrior determined to advance the cause of general practice/ family medicine in Sri Lanka and around the world.
