Abstract

Residential aged care refers to accommodation and 24-hour care provided to older people who can no longer live independently in their own homes. Internationally, residential aged care may be referred to as nursing homes or care homes. There is a high prevalence of people living with dementia in residential aged care worldwide. Accurate estimates of the prevalence of dementia for people living in residential aged care are difficult to determine due to lack of available data about people living in residential aged care and undiagnosed dementia. Estimates available indicate that 48% of residents in the United States (US), 69% of residents in the United Kingdom (UK) and 47% of residents in Australian residential age care are living with dementia...
