Abstract
Diabetes is a major and growing public health problem in Australia. Furthermore, extrapolation from US data suggests that approximately 200 000 Australians suffer from both hypertension and diabetes.[1] These common conditions occur together more frequently than by chance and are often associated with other risk factors for cardiovascular disease -the so-called 'syndrome X' (Fig. 1).
