Diabetes is a major and growing public health problem in Australia. Furthermore, extrapolation from US data suggests that approximately 200 000 Australians suffer from both hypertension and diabetes. These common conditions occur together more frequently than by chance and are often associated with other risk factors for cardiovascular disease -the so-called 'syndrome X' (Fig. 1).
