Abstract

There is considerable evidence that people with disabilities and their carers experience poorer morbidity and mortality rates, earlier onset of morbidity and lower life expectancy, and poorer access to services and opportunities for healthy nutrition and physical activity. In 2006 a South Australian Parliamentary Inquiry into Fast Foods and Obesity recommended that SA Health progress
collaborative action to facilitate easier access to nutrition and physical activity programs for people with disabilities. In response, this eat well be active Disability Sector Capacity Building consultancy project was funded (January-June 2009) to:

1. Review existing policies, programs and services in South Australia against those regarded as best practice and consider their effectiveness and practicality for people with disabilities and their carers.

2. Consult with the SA disability sector and other key stakeholders to scope current and potential capacity to promote nutrition and physical activity for people with disabilities and their carers.

3. Recommend action, particularly in the disability sector, to promote nutrition and physical activity for people with disabilities and their carers.
