Emergencies in Hematology

    Abstract

    Hematologic emergencies may have protean manifestations, and recogni­tion and management of some of the relatively common haematological emergencies has been outlined below. While a detailed account of each condition is beyond the scope of this text, the typical features and a brief guide to treatment is given.

    The following conditions have been considered:
    ■ Hemorrhagic disorders: basic principles of recognition and management
    ■ Sickle cell crises
    ■ The neutropenic patient with fever
    ■ Hyperviscosity
