Abstract

The role of an academic journal editor comes with various responsibilities.
From articulating a journal’s vision to ‘operationalising it through appropriate
structures, systems, processes, and people’ (Sharma, 2016, p. 247), an editor
must oversee many moving parts. Two of the most critical components are the
journal’s publisher and software management system. However, before selecting or reviewing a publisher, editors must have a clear understanding of their journal’s niche, scope, and goals. Consider the subject area, the target audience, and the specific focus of your journal. This information will help guide
your choice of publisher as you look for one with expertise and experience in
your journal’s niche. For example, consider reviewing the ‘top’ journals within
your field. Where are the journals with the highest impact factors published? In
an era of information proliferation, metrics have become crucial to academic
scholarship as they provide key data about a journal’s impact (i.e., number of
article citations), reach and relevance among its readers (Elsevier, n.d.). This is
often a key consideration for an author. However, the same applies to an editor
