Abstract


This research investigates the education process of children and youth from the MST settlement Pirituba II, located in the regions of Itapeva and Itaberá, in South-eastern São Paulo This chapter is about the Project of Rural Settlement (PRS) which comes under the jurisdiction of the Fundação ITESP which is linked to the São Paulo State Secretariat of Justice. The project arose from a land occupa
tion instigated by peasant families, during the 1980s who had organized themselves as rural trades people and pastoralists in the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) – popularly known in English as the Landless Movement. It was here that the question of basic education actively delivered in the settlement was applied in practice as a result of the fight for landless rights organised, especially, by the MST.
