Abstract
This entry discusses English-medium instruction (EMI) across the Asian region, with reference South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia. It begins with a description of the sociolinguistic contexts of the Asian region, followed by a discussion of the broad characteristics of primary, secondary and tertiary education. The entry then presents an extensive and rather detailed overview of EMI in 11 Outer Circle (Bangladesh, Brunei, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and Sri Lanka) and 10 Expanding Circle (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Macau, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam) countries.
