Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of English-medium instruction (EMI) in Singaporean higher education. It begins with a concise literature review and proceeds to examine the history of higher education in Singapore and the arc of language policies relating to EMI practices. The chapter subsequently presents findings from our own empirical research on EMI in Singapore’s six major tertiary institutions. This research is based on the results of a large-scale study that surveyed over 1,000 students in Singapore’s six main universities and investigated the multilingual backgrounds of these students and their experiences of EMI education.
