Abstract

This entry provides an overview of issues relating to English-medium instruction (EMI) worldwide, and the links between EMI and world Englishes as an academic enterprise. The entry begins with a short history of EMI as a designated area of scholarship, before providing a detailed review of major publications on EMI in recent years. The entry then discusses a world Englishes model of EMI, which is grounded in a sociolinguistic perspective, which owes a great deal to the work of Braj B. Kachru. The entry concludes by highlighting the need for empirical research involving the participation of locally based scholars in world Englishes settings worldwide.
