Abstract

This chapter has two main aims. First, to describe the general background to English-medium instruction (EMI) across the entire Asian region, with reference to Outer Circle and Expanding Circle societies in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Second, it analyses data from five case studies to identify and explain the background, and varying forms of EMI in higher education in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and South Korea
