Enhancing student voice and success through students as partners (SAPS): pedagogy in the college of business, government and law

Research output: Contribution to conferenceAbstractpeer-review

Abstract

Student success is a broad concept encompassing principles of student wellbeing, identity, and belonging, as well as learning and academic skills. To achieve success requires translation of national and university wide principles into practical strategies that can be implemented by teachers in the classroom. In the College of Business, Government and Law (CBGL), Flinders University, a multifaceted Student Success Framework has been developed, which seeks to foster collaboration, guide and empower teachers, and identify that responsibility for success is shared across staff and students. Student success is closely tied to the values that inform our decisions as educators and the extent to which we create inclusive learning environments. This presentation provides interdisciplinary perspectives from staff across CBGL and reflects on the practical implementation of the framework through Students as Partners (SaPs) pedagogy. The authors unpack how partnership can help establish a shared space and culture in which students are more comfortable to learn (Mercer-Mapstone et al., 2018; Lizzio, 2006), shifting away from perceptions of students as passive ‘consumers’ (Bunce et al., 2017), to active ‘co-producers’ of their learning (Cook-Sather & Luz, 2015). Strategies and case studies are offered, to build a pragmatic and shared understanding of what student success means.
