    Abstract

The Newstart Program at Burnie High School is designed to support the most seriously disengaged students. Newstart was introduced for the first time in 2008. The program is resource intensive, due mainly to the high staffing component required for it to operate effectively. In 2007 the school successfully secured $30,000 in funding from a local Area Task Force. Students are selected for Newstart to ensure the composition of the group aligns well to the achievement of these aims. Unique characteristics were defined to ensure the selection of appropriate students for the program.
