Abstract
This synthesis consolidates international and Australian evidence on
employment supports that enable competitive integrated employment (CIE)
(U.S. Department of Education, n.d.), also known in Australia as open
employment, for people with intellectual disability (ID). It translates findings
into practical implications for service design and workforce training in the
Australian context.
The synthesis follows a SWiM-aligned narrative approach (Campbell et al., 2020)
and is underpinned by a multi-level programme theory (MIP-CIE), which frames
‘support needs’ as a mismatch between individual cognitive/communication
strengths and workplace demands (Kristof-Brown, Zimmerman, & Johnson,
2005)
