N2 - Émigré, settler, refugee, foreigner, alien, queue jumper, new arrival: the list could go on. There are many types of migrants and many ways in which Australia has treated migrants. Whatever the mode or motivations for migration, one thing is clear – Australia was, and continues to be, shaped by migrations to lands that were never ceded by their original inhabitants. As the recent Australian Census (2021) informs us, more than half of Australians have at least one parent born overseas or were themselves born elsewhere. A rosy national narrative situates many of these migrants as upliftingly contributing to unparalleled cultural diversity.
