Abstract

An expedition to South Australia’s Migration Museum might commence by emerging out of the Adelaide Railway Station and walking east along North Terrace. This leads you past Old Parliament House, part of which was built in 1843 to house the Legislative Council. Old Parliament House escaped demolition in the 1970s and for a time housed South Australia’s Constitutional Museum, Australia’s first political museum. Next there is the ‘new’ Parliament House with its west and east wings built in two stages, 50 years apart. Across King William Street, peering through the gates near the guardhouse, you could view Government House, with the original 1839 section adeptly integrated into the present two-storey structure.
