First steps towards harmonisation of serum total bile acids

Research output: Contribution to journalMeeting Abstractpeer-review

Abstract

The synthesis of bile acids (BAs) from cholesterol is a complex, multi-step process which occurs predominantly in hepatocytes. Disturbances in the BA cycles result in an accumulation of different BA species, which can have cytotoxic effects at increased concentrations. Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) is a rare disorder associated with an increased risk of stillbirth, premature birth, and foetal compromise, as well as causing maternal distress from severe pruritus.
