abstract = "In conventional switched reluctance motors (SRMs), such as 10 / 8 and 6 / 4 configurations, the number of stator poles exceeds that of rotor poles. This paper introduces a novel five-phase switched reluctance motor (SRM) with 10 stator poles and 18 rotor poles for variable-speed applications. The torque ripple of the proposed SRM is minimized based on a rigorous analytical design. The studied SRM design is then compared against that of conventional 10 / 8 SRM design. 2D finite element analysis confirms SRM design with higher rotor pole count realizes a significant reduction in torque ripple against the conventional 10 / 8 SRM design of similar volume and phase count. The proposed SRM design is prototyped for further performance evaluation.",
