This is a time of great challenge, but also a time of great innovation, for global health care.

It is timely that this book has been launched during the COVID-19 pandemic. While placing healthcare systems, healthcare planners, and healthcare providers and their patients under great pressure, the pandemic has also been a time of rapid digital health innovation. We have seen many reforms including widespread introduction of teleconsultations, improvements in digital health data exchange through the greater use of electronic health records and e-prescriptions, advances in point-of-care testing, development of digital vaccine certificates and passports, and the adoption of digital tools to support virtual care.

We have also experienced the use of big data in public health at a scale never seen before to understand national and global pandemic responses and the impact on populations. At the same time, advanced digital communication capability has become ubiquitous in many parts of the world through widespread adoption of videoconferencing for personal and professional use, and online access to essential healthcare information has allowed rapid dissemination of critical advice to populations while also improving digital literacy for many. The changes keep coming, and our lives will never be the same...
