Abstract

In 2021, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death in Ravenna in 1321, the world celebrated his remarkable literary achievement. Even the spectre of the COVID-19 global pandemic, with its accompanying restrictions to travel and limitations to in-person social networking, could not dampen the levels of enthusiasm for the beloved poet and his works. Many people and organisations pivoted to online mode in order to enjoy readings, recitations and concerts, as well as continue with planned publication projects, exhibitions, competitions and mini-festivals. The wide range of activities brought people of
all ages and backgrounds together and Italy embarked on a national day of commemoration, Dantedi, taking place annually on 25 March, known for the Feast of the Annunciation, the celebration of New Year’s Day in Florence and the date when Dante’s fictional journey to the Inferno begins. When we view images of Dante’s death-mask, we are reminded of his exilic status as an individual operating without borders and reformulating poetic discourse in a highly original way. The recent online gatherings and celebrations across nations and hemispheres are testament to the growing international reach of Dante’s transformative voice and imaginative prowess; an artistic influence without borders that takes the reader on a journey to the boundless reaches of the cosmos.
