Abstract
This chapter looks back at the foundations of game-based approaches (GBAs), from Mauldon and Redfern's seminal proposal on games' categories to the successive iterations and recent extensions of that idea. It also clarifies possible ways of using a GBA in physical education classes, from the original step-based progressions to more dynamic frameworks encompassing a wider range of teaching styles. Pedagogies related to the development of thinking of players are reinforced, highlighting one of the most attractive features of GBAs: participation in modified games. The summary combines the overarching principles of a GBA as conceived in the collection of international perspectives offered in this chapter.
