Abstract
The recent publicity around Angelina Jolie's double mastectomy has highlighted once more a longstanding debate around gene patents, in which different views on how to encourage and resource the development and dissemination of new health care technologies (with applications to critical areas like cancer prevention and treatment) play out in a context complicated by sensitive issues of informed consent, advice, insurance, psychology and privacy as well as intellectual property.
