Getting started with integrated knowledge translation

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter offers a practical guide for researchers and teams seeking to apply an integrated knowledge translation approach in their work. Grounded in the Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model, it introduces five core elements, developed through our own professional experiences and a synthesis of knowledge translation theories, models, and frameworks. These core elements are offered as foundation for planning and undertaking an integrated approach, complementing rather than replacing established theories, models, and frameworks. They are intended to researchers and those they work with find common ground by working with basic building blocks and guide movement across knowledge translation processes. Each element is accompanied by a checklist with reflective questions designed to help teams plan, assess, and refine how they work together. Readers will need to consider the context-specific nuances of their projects in answering these questions. This chapter is valuable both for those embarking on their knowledge translation journey and for experienced researchers navigating complex systems who are looking for an additional resource to support prospective planning and ongoing reflection with those they work with.
